Northamptonshire VIXINS V London Sports, BCEW / Nemesys League

Sunday 29th June 2008

Report by David Gavrilovic

Northants VI.XI.NS welcomed London Sports at Obelisk CC in Northampton on a very blustery day on which the sun also made numerous appearances.

Northants fielded a strong side including a comeback for Mark Higgins who hadn' played for 3 years. London were missing a number of established players and gave a debut to South African Paul Upson as their 9 players took on Northants 10. Northants won the toss and sent London out to bat.

London started out quite solidly with Shazad Iqbal hitting a powerful boundary early on and Charles Ronayne looking in good form. Their opening stand was brought to a premature end when a brilliant piece of fielding and a direct hit from Mark Provan brought about a run out.

Paul Upson was next in and although he played a number of strong shots he was deceived by a spinning delivery from Dave Keeling and was bowled for 3. Ronayne and his new partner Danny Smith set about rebuilding the innings taking the score to about 70 before the third wicket fell. Ronayne ran out of luck when he struck a powerful shot into the off side which hit Northants captain b1 David Gavrilovic in the chest bounced down and the fielder took a sharp catch moving forward to dismiss his opposite number for 23.

Smith and Shakir Iqbal kept the innings going with Iqbal hitting two forceful sixes including using lastair Provan's own pace against him by lifting the ball over the ropes from his first ball.

Eventually the partnership was broken with the score at around 130 when Danny Smith clipped his own wicket off the bowling of Simon Hill for 36 before Shakir Iqbal fell soon after for 19. The remaining wickets fell uickly with the exception of Fiaz Iqbal (18 not out) who benefited from a terrible piece of fieling from Dave Keeling which cost 8 over throws. Keling did finish with 3-25 and Alastair Provan with 3-41 as London were dismissed for 172. This left Northants with 37 overs to try and chase down the 173 needed for the win.

London opened the innings with 3 consecutive b1 overs which turned out to be an error as the score raced to 50/0 after 18 legal balls. Mark Horbatowski and David Gavrilovic both fell with the score between 5 and 75 to leave opener Ian Goodearl already on about 45 to be joined by Alastair Provan.

Goodearl and Provan kept a fast scoring rate with Goodearl finally dismissed bowled by Fiaz Iqbal for 80. Alastair Provan was then joined by his father Mark and they guided Northants to victory with 7 wickets and 22.4 overs to spare. Alastair finished 29no with Mark 12no. London's bowlers finished with poor figures with the exception of Charles Ronayne (2-16 from 3 overs).

This result left Northants in contention to reach the top 4 with London still in pole position for another place in the top 4.
